Zangulus (Japanese: ザングルス Romaji: zangurusu) is a wandering swordsman in the Slayers series. His Japanese voice actor is 島田 敏 Bin Shimada. In the dub by Central Park Media, he is voiced by Liam O'Malley in episode 13 and by Ted Lewis in episodes 14-21 and 49-52.

Zangulus is a mercenary, and he is a swordsman of considerable skill. Although he cannot use magic, Zangulus carries a weapon called the Howling Sword, a magical sword created by Rezo that can shoot great gusts of wind. Zangulus had originally been hired, along with the sorcerer Vrumugun, as a bounty hunter by Eris Vrumugun and Copy Rezo to capture Lina Inverse, Gourry Gabriev, and Zelgadiss Graywords, and bring them to Sairaag. He soon became obsessed with fighting Gourry, to see who was the better swordsman. He and Gourry did finally duel in Rezo's lab, but Gourry won in the end, and Zangulus then left. He later re-appeared towards the end of Slayers NEXT, looking for a rematch. However, Gourry was being held prisoner by Hellmaster Fibrizo at the time, so Zangulus did not get a chance to duel him a second time. He did, however, help Lina and the others fight Hellmaster.

It was during this time that Zangulus met and fell in love with Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova, whom he married after the battle with Hellmaster.

Relationships[]

Gourry Gabriev: Although Zangulus is determined to defeat Gourry in a duel, it is clear that he has a great deal of respect for the swordsman, though he is reluctant to admit it.

Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova: Zangulus and Martina fell in love during the battle against Hellmaster, and he became protective of her. Not long after the battle ended, the two of them got married, and he became King of Zoana.

Trivia[]

  • Zangulus, along with Martina, is an original character, created by the anime staff; he does not appear in the original novels. He still can be considered a canon character, though, as the series' plot and cast was supervised and approved by Hajime Kanzaka.
  • Interestingly, the second novel features a character named Rod, who is very similar to Zangulus in character design and motivation, including a passionate obsession with dueling Gourry as to prove who is the superior swordsman. It is possible that he served as the template for Zangulus for the anime.
