Talk:Side
From KanzakaDex
I've been using the terms astral side and physical side to refer to planes, as that is what they're called in Japanese. CPM just translated side to plane even though the characters say side in English. --Argy 18:07, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- I understand that they say "astral side", but they are actually referring to a concept which was established in fantasy literature as "plane" not only in english, but in other languages as well. (And an article named "side" would be a bit strange, anyway. ;)) ) I don't think it causes too much confusion, I'll just redirect "astral side" to "astral plane" (or the other way around) and that will solve the problem. :) -Pip25
- I don't think editing without discussion will really solve any differences. :(
- This is a knowledge base, like a dictionary. It must not expect previous knowledge from the reader to understand it's contents. In my oppinion, article names should reflect common knowledge, not specialized knowledge of the Slayers world, so using "side" is unnecessary, even distracting. Furthermore, I just discovered that the characters in the anime (or at least in Slayers Try) say "plane", not side, even in the english translation. The physical planes are always refered as planes in official texts, not sides as well. Where do they say "side", exactly? --Pip25 19:06, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- I already explained that the characters clearly say "astral side" in English even though they are speaking Japanese.
- Google search for "astral side" and "slayers". Google search for "astral plane" and "slayers".
- I do not care to use Software Sculptors' translations. I want to be as accurate and faithful to the original Japanese version as possible.
- Moving Astral plane to Astral side automatically created a redirect. --Argy 03:27, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- Forgive me, it seems that I misunderstood what you said before. So, you meant that "side" was used in the original Japanese version, not in any translations. I see. I must say that this still sounds strange: Japanese are notorious for their misuse of english terms, and this is an english page, so it should first and foremost stay true to the language it is written in, at least that is what I think.
- However, I am not the head editor, and we are really beginning to get too worked up on this silly small thing, so perhaps it is better if I do not push this matter any further. --Pip25 08:00, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
